3 Tips for Working Through an Injury or Illness

Working your way through an injury or illness while wishing you were back at the gym or studio can be extremely frustrating. You’ve built yourself a community of fitness friends and here you are sitting at home watching everyone climb the Wodify leaderboard - without you. This is not the time to feel bad for yourself. Instead, it’s time to do the opposite! We have three easy ways to fuel your mind and body to fast-track your recovery.

Rest to Recover

When you are experiencing an illness or injury, your body is on overdrive to repair and get back to a normal baseline. The best thing you can do for your body is put it at rest as best you can. A common cold or a small tweak in the back doesn’t necessarily mean you can hit the sheets horizontally for days at a time (but that’s ok, too!), but there are things you can do to ensure you are getting proper rest. Such things include, but aren’t limited to: 

  • Going to sleep at an appropriate time (utilize your fitness trackers for guidance!)
  • Taking breaks throughout the day
  • Resting areas that are compromised by injury
  • Utilizing tools to speed up your recovery (check out our Recovery Tools Blog!)
  • Take those rest days

Resting will look different for everyone, but the most important step that you can take to move close to recovery is to listen to your body and respond accordingly.

We all know how important it is to fuel bodies for fitness with adequate hydration and nutrition. We also know how easy it is to get into a funk during an injury or illness (hello, comfort foods), but that is the exact opposite of what our bodies need from us. Fueling our bodies to recover from an injury or illness is just as important (if not more!) as fueling our bodies to hit a workout. Stay the course of your typical nutrition, increase hydration, and add any vitamins or supplements that can help support your body along the way.

Mental Health Matters

So our physical bodies are hurting, whether it be an injury or an illness, but when our bodies need rest, sometimes the muscle that gets the most workout is the brain. For someone who uses workouts as an outlet, being forced to sit out to recover, can be frustrating, to say the least. There are some things that you can do to support your mental health such as:

  • Get outside and in the sun
  • Do some grounding techniques
  • Stay on your nutrition/hydration game
  • Watch your comfort shows or movies (come on, we all have them!)
  • Cold exposure
  • Move in ways that will not overtire you, but still, inch you toward recovery

When you’re forced to sit out of the gym due to an injury or illness, sometimes it’s not the workout you miss the most, but the community. You’ve built relationships with gym owners and members alike and a fitness bond is like no other. If you want to get back into the gym, but your not quite ready to go full bore, chat with your trainers and come up with a plan. Is your injury something that can be worked around or substituted during a WOD? Maybe you can utilize the recovery tools during your Martial Arts class while everyone spars on the mats.
