June 2016 was the month for the first philanthropy event for Wodify in Portugal. Eighteen team members from the Lisbon office went to D. Fernando II basic school in Sintra to help improve some classrooms and perform some gardening. Although this school is located in a wonderful Unesco World Class Protected Area, its infraestructures are, however, fastly degrading. To top it off they are also suffering budget cuts so the school’s management is facing a couple of difficulties.
This was the first opportunity to help the community in portuguese territory.
“Painting the 2 classrooms was a challenge as they were considerably degraded, there were many signs of infiltrations, humidity and mold, which damaged considerably the previous paint job.”
The team was divided into two groups, one would handle the classrooms and the other the exterior garden. Painting the two classrooms was a challenge as they were considerably degraded, there were many signs of infiltrations, humidity and mold, which damaged considerably the previous paint job. But the team came together and managed to improve the rooms considerably.
The second team dedicated the whole day to gardening taking care of two of the most important garden spaces of the school. Under the hot summer sun fields were cleaned, garbage was collected and disposed of, weeds gave way to clear paths, wild cactuses, bushes and trees were “groomed”.
“In the end, the team was dirty, tired and sunburnt but really happy that they could help make the school a little better. ”
In the end, the team was dirty, tired and sunburnt but really happy that they could help make the school a little better. The team is proud and excited to know that the next school year will greet kids from 10 to 15 years of age with a cleaner and improved facility where they can, not only learn but also have just a little more fun.
